Players will be able to change their gender in World of Warcraft freely after its upcoming DLC.
As people retain their desire to see changes for more representation in the games industry, gender changes will be free of charge in Blizzard’s fantasy epic, World of Warcraft after its Shadowlands expansion. Initially, the only way you could change something like gender in-game was through the Blizzard Store where you could drop real money (around $16) to change your character’s look.
Most of your character could be altered in-game through shops like the barber, which can change your hairstyle, dye it, and even modify your face as a whole. Gender was a notable exception. According to a Eurogamer report, this will be stamped out as they didn’t feel it was the “right message.”
“A long time ago, we had the ability for players to go in – it was actually a paid service – and change their character. Much of that is now in the barbershop in the game. And as we were adding things up in Shadowlands, we realized, ‘Gosh the only way you can change your gender in World of Warcraft is to go through this paid service.’ And we felt like that’s not the right message.”
It’s still a paid service right now, but as they launch Shadowlands, they plan on knocking down that barrier.
“Unfortunately we can’t fix that right now but it is our intent with Shadowlands to take that out of being a paid service thing and [put it] in the barbershop. But that’s not something we can easily hotfix – unfortunately, we can’t do that right now. It is something that we’re going to have in Shadowlands itself.”
The latest expansion will be launching in fall 2020.
