Square Enix has opened up Eidos-Sherbrooke, a new Canadian studio dedicated to R&D.
Square Enix is opening a new studio focused on research and development in Quebec. Eidos-Sherbrooke will be researching new technologies to create better games for the next generation of consoles. The new studio will open this fall with 20 employees working remotely, with the studio premises opening in early 2021 with the goal of expanding to 100 employees within five years.
Commenting on the opening of Eidos-Sherbrooke, the head of studio at Eidos-Montréal, David Anfossi, said:
“We wanted to continue our controlled growth and keep people and technology at the heart of this vision. The opening of this new expert studio will provide tools for content developers to enrich the experience and immersion of players.”
Eidos-Sherbrooke will be headed by Julien Bouvrais, the current chief technical officer at Eidos-Montreal. Of interest to the new studio are developments in cloud-computing, voxel-based raytracing and multi-node game engines. There are also plans in motion to collaborate with the nearby University of Sherbrooke.

The opening of Eidos-Sherbrooke represents a step forward for Square and Eidos-Montreal, ahead of the new console generation they are anticipating the potential for significant leaps in technology that will draw in consumers.
