Skyrim Grandma, AKA Shirley Curry, has been through some rough times recently with negative comments. Ever since then, the community has been banding together to pick her back up and tell her that it’s okay as she chooses to change things in her life and channel.

In a video posted on May 2, YouTube streamer and content creator, Shirley Curry, affectionately known by her fans, to which she labels as her “grandkids,” as “Skyrim Grandma,” opened up about her experience with negative comments and abuse on her recent videos. The 82-year-old gamer, who regularly uploads videos of her playing RPG titles, particularly Skyrim, enjoys interacting with her fanbase and followers, often responding or reacting to hundreds of comments a day. However, the beloved icon of mature-gaming has expressed her frustration at the constant barrage of trolling directed toward her channel.

In the video, Curry said; “I’m not enjoying recording anymore at all. It’s no longer fun. I feel like I’m under a microscope all of the time. I have much more fun and I play much better when I’m just playing by myself.” She wrote in the description of the video that she was “changing things in my life and on my channel.”

Curry, who has been immortalized by Bethesda as an NPC in The Elder Scrolls VI following a successful petition launched over two years ago, explained that she was no longer getting the same level of joy from producing regular content on her YouTube channel and said that the numbers of subscribers she had did not match up with her recent video views.

Many influencers, both inside and outside the gaming world have expressed concern about the toll online fame can take on your mental and physical health with “Skyrim Grandma” being no exception. She explains during the 12-minute vlog. “My blood pressure is going insane. My stress level is way too high. And I’m going to have to take control of it. Some of the comments are stressing me out way too much.”

Following the posting of the video there has been an outpouring of support and solidarity for “Skyrim Grandma” as the gaming community came together to show their appreciation for one of its oldest trailblazers. One of her subscribers, Blue Jacket, commented on the video. The comment received over 8,000 likes from viewers who felt the same way.

“Another fantastic thing about you Shirley. You’ve shaped your community of fans into a fellowship of wonderful and kind-hearted people! (Just read the other comments if you want proof!) And you were able to do this because you’re such a good influence.”

Youtuber YongYea, himself with over one million subscribers, sent a message of support to the “Skyrim Grandma” saying in a video reaction: “It’s kind of heartbreaking to see this given how beloved she is. She’s such a sweet person and really done no wrong. To see this treatment towards her from a minority of people and driving her to scale back her streaming and upload schedule. It sucks to see.”  He went on to encourage his subscribers to “send her some love” and praised the supportive comments already flooding her page.

We wish Shirley Curry the best recovery with her health and hope she can continue enjoying gaming in her own way and in her own time. After all – what’s the point of gaming if you can’t have fun?
